One of the number one questions I get asked is….
Should a real estate agent allow local Realtors to follow them on their social media accounts?
Do you want to be seen as a collaborator?
Someone who wants to be friendly and help as many of their local colleagues as possible….
Or, do you want to be seen as a competitor?
Someone who wants to create distance and protect their brand.
Let me ask you this…
If you were putting in work, day in, and day out… creating compelling content, captions, and graphics on social media. And someone came along and plagiarized all of your content, how would that make you feel?
I’ll tell you from personal experiences…
My lawyer sends letters to people who plagiarize my content almost weekly, and I’m going to tell you…
It really grinds my gears.
This is why brands like Disney and Mattel will sue everyone who misuses their trademarks, no matter how big or small. Disney does not allow anyone to use Mickey Mouse without their permission and Mattel acts like a jealous boyfriend around Barbie.
The reason is because when you have a brilliant, creative idea and someone rips you off, they’re stealing a little bit of your genius – And it’s even worse when they’re doing it against you.
The only way someone would ever be comfortable with a competitor following them on social media is if they’ve never experienced being ripped off. And if you’ve never been ripped off, it’s because you’re content’s not that good.
Why You Shouldn’t Let Local Realtors Follow You on Social Media
#1 You’re Killing Your Organic Reach
All social media runs on algorithms.
An algorithm is what determines who and what you see in your newsfeed every day.
The more engagement you get on social media, the more free reach the social platforms give you.
When you let local agents follow you, your pages and profiles die over time.
Because these local agents aren’t liking, commenting, sharing, or engaging with your content.
Typically, they’re just lurking, stalking, and creeping.
Some of you come to me with dead pages and ask me for help… And I look and see that you haven’t posted for 14 years and your page is infested with local agents.
When that’s the case, you only have 2 options:
- Have a funeral for your page and start over with a new one or
- Put the page on life support and send your warmest regards.
If you hate, free reach, then allow agents to follow you on social.
But if you want to get as much organic reach as possible, then it’s not a good idea.
#2 They’re Hacking Your Sales Funnels
I teach all of my students to post on social media using a solid social media strategy.
You should never hit post without a plan.
We don’t post for fun, we post to get leads and grow our real estate for businesses. Anything else is a total waste of time.
I teach my students to post two types of content:
- Engagement Content
- Conversion Content
Engagement Content attracts your community and Conversion Content closes them.
When you’re posting with a solid social strategy in place, you’ll have sales funnels behind every single post.
The last thing you’ll want is for some local agent to start snooping around, see your post, opt-in, and steal your funnel.
If you’re posting for fun, then allow local agents to follow you on social. But if you’re posting for business, then it’s not a good idea.
#3 Some Agents Have Sticky Fingers
This brings me back to what I talked about in the beginning of the show….
Some agents will see your stuff and steal it – verbatim.
They’ll give you zero credit and use it as their own.
Let me tell you a quick story…
One of my students mentioned to me in our paid Facebook Group that she met a woman at a local banquet, the woman asked to follow her on social media, my student agreed…
And right in front of my student, the woman proceeds to scroll through her content, and stealing all of the posts!
A week later, she takes a quick peek at the woman’s account, and sure enough, the woman is using all of the plagiarized content – verbatim.
And most of these agents aren’t even doing maliciously. They don’t even know it’s wrong. They see it, they like it, they take it.
This is also why I teach the agents in my Academy to brand all of their content with their unique fonts, colors, and personal photos – so it doesn’t even make sense to steal it.
If you want your content hijacked, then allow local agents to follow you on social.
But if you want to protect your brand, then it’s not a good idea.
But How Do I Unfollow Them Now?
I know that some of you are thinking, “Well, I don’t want to unfriend all of my local colleagues, because it’s rude.”
And you’re right!
There’s a right way and a wrong way to do it.
You can block them on Instagram and your Facebook Business Page, no problem.
The sticky part comes to your personal Facebook Profile.
But there’s a way to easily exclude these people from seeing your posts and that’s what I teach all of my Academy members to do.
So this way, you can remain friends and protect your brand – with no hard feelings!
